How TutorDNA measures the Preply market
Every figure on TutorDNA's market pages comes from the tutor listings in Preply's public search results, read every week. This page explains what is read, how each figure is worked out, and what the figures can't show.
What is read
Every Monday, TutorDNA reads the search results Preply shows for each subject it tracks, page by page and in Preply's order. Each listing gives a tutor's listed hourly rate, lessons taught, reviews and rating, whether they are a Super Tutor, Preply's “Booked N times recently” badge when shown, and where the tutor appears in the results.
New scrapes reach members first: signed-in members see each one as soon as it lands, and these public pages switch to it a week later, or sooner if the scrape they show would otherwise be more than three weeks old.
Only what Preply shows publicly is read. TutorDNA is independent and not affiliated with Preply.
Listed prices
A listed price is the hourly rate a new student sees on a tutor's card, before Preply's commission. Medians, middle halves (the 25th to 75th percentile) and other percentiles are taken over every tutor in the latest scrape with a price.
If the newest scrape of a subject came back with fewer than 500 priced tutors, it is treated as incomplete and the previous scrape is shown instead.
Lessons a month
Preply shows each tutor's lifetime lesson count. The change in that count between two scrapes at least five days apart, scaled to 30 days, gives the lessons the tutor taught a month. It is measured for tutors who appear in both scrapes.
When lessons are compared with price, only tutors whose listed price stayed the same across the scrapes measured are counted. A tutor who raised their price taught part of those lessons at the old one. Longtime students can also stay on an older price, so these figures show how busy tutors at each price are, not how many new students a price brings.
Tutors who appear in both scrapes stayed near the top of Preply's search results, so they are busier than the market as a whole.
Price changes
For tutors listed in both of the last two scrapes, TutorDNA compares the two listed prices: kept, raised or lowered, and by how much.
Take-home pay
Each measured tutor's monthly pay is their lessons a month times their listed price. Preply's commission is then taken at the tier their lifetime lesson count puts them in, read as hours. Medians and middle halves are taken over those per-tutor figures, never as a typical price times typical lessons.
Commission tiers come from Preply's help center, "Preply commission model", checked on 5 Oct 2026. Trial lessons, where Preply keeps everything, aren't visible on a listing, so take-home figures are an upper bound. Taxes, payment fees and currency conversion aren't deducted.
Minimum sample sizes
A price band or experience band with fewer than 30 tutors shows no figures. Lessons a month and pay are published once at least 60 tutors have been measured in a subject, and price changes once at least 100 tutors appear in both scrapes.
What is never published
The public pages show market totals only: no tutor names, photos, profile links or individual figures.
