Questions about Preply's commission

How much commission does Preply take?
Between 33% and 18% of each lesson. New tutors pay 33% for their first 20 hours; the rate steps down to 28%, 25% and 22%, and reaches 18% after 400 hours taught.
Does Preply take the whole trial lesson?
Yes. Preply keeps 100% of the trial lesson with each new student, and uses it to offer students a free replacement if the trial doesn't suit them. Trial hours still count towards your commission tier.
Is the commission set per student?
No. It depends on the total hours you have taught on Preply across all your students, so every lesson with every student moves you towards a lower rate.
How much do Preply tutors raise their price?
Of 1,881 tutors TutorDNA compared between August and October 2026, a third raised their price within two months, by $5 at the median, about a fifth of the old price. After commission, a $5 raise adds $3.35 a lesson at 33% and $4.10 at 18%. More in how often Preply tutors change their prices.
How accurate is this calculator?
It applies Preply's published tiers, checked on 5 Oct 2026, to the numbers you enter. It counts every lesson at your full hourly rate and keeps your tier fixed for the month, so shorter lessons or a tier change partway through will move the real figure. It leaves out taxes and payment fees.
