Busy French tutors on Preply bring in a median $1,507 a month at their listed price and keep about $1,230 after Preply's commission.
Measured from the lessons 375 French tutors taught over 62 days, a median of 58 a month. These tutors stayed near the top of Preply's search results, so most tutors make less.

Preply takes a share of every lesson. The share falls as the total hours you have taught on Preply grow, and Preply keeps all of the trial lesson with each new student.

What these figures leave out
- Trial lessons. Preply keeps all of each new student's trial, and how many trials a tutor teaches isn't shown on Preply, so take-home here is an upper bound.
- Shorter lessons. Every lesson is counted at the full hourly rate; shorter lessons cost students less.
- Older prices. Longtime students can stay on an earlier price. Only tutors whose listed price held between scrapes are counted, which narrows this but can't rule it out.
- Who is measured. Tutors listed near the top of Preply's search results in both scrapes. They are busier than the average tutor; new and quieter tutors aren't in these figures.
- Hours and lessons. Preply's commission tiers count hours; a tutor's lifetime lesson count stands in for them here.
- Taxes and fees. Income tax, payment fees and currency conversion aren't deducted.
