The median English tutor in Preply's search results lists $30 an hour, and the middle half charge $23 to $42. That comes from the 953 English tutors TutorDNA read in Preply's search results on 6 October 2026.
To see where specialists sit, we grouped tutors by what their headline says they teach, matching whole words in any capitalization, and compared each group's median listed price with the rest. A tutor can belong to several groups, and any group with fewer than 30 tutors is left out.
The short answer
- Accent and pronunciation work lists highest. Headlines that mention pronunciation or accent list at a median $40, and the 36 that mention British list at $43.50.
- Exam preparation splits by exam. TOEFL tutors list at $34.50, Cambridge exam tutors at the $30 median, and IELTS tutors below it, at $28.
- General practice sits at or below the median. Conversation lists at $26; fluency, "native" and teaching certificates all sit at $30.

What the numbers suggest
A named result lists higher than general practice. The groups at the top promise something a student can name: a different accent, a passed interview, a TOEFL score. The groups at or below the median offer practice in general, such as conversation or fluency, or point to a certificate.
The gaps aren't simply experience. Tutors who mention a teaching certificate (TEFL, TESOL or CELTA) have taught the most lessons, a median 1,938, yet list at the $30 median. Tutors who mention British have taught the fewest, 817, and list highest.
IELTS is the crowded exam. More than twice as many tutors mention IELTS as TOEFL, 129 against 56, and IELTS tutors list $6.50 lower.
One caution. These are the listed prices of tutors who chose those words. They don't show that adding a word to your headline raises your price, and long-time students may pay less than a tutor lists.
If you teach English on Preply
- Name the result you deliver. If you already coach pronunciation, interviews or a specific exam, your headline can say so: tutors who do list above the median, though that alone doesn't prove the words raise a price.
- Check where your rate sits. The English rates page places any rate against the whole English market, and its "What stands out" section compares native speakers, specialties and Super Tutors with live figures.
- Weigh the Super Tutor badge. Among tutors with similar experience, English Super Tutors list $4 to $6 more from 500 lessons on. The Super Tutor guide compares all four subjects.
- Know what you keep. Preply's commission takes 18% to 33% of each lesson, plus every trial. The commission calculator shows what a rate leaves you.

How we measured
TutorDNA reads the tutor listings in Preply's public search results every week. This page uses the 953 English tutors listed on 6 October 2026. A listed price is the hourly rate a new student sees, before Preply's commission. Medians and the middle half (the 25th to 75th percentile) are taken over the tutors in each group. More in the methodology.
