The median Math tutor in Preply's search results lists $15 an hour, and the middle half charge $8 to $25. That comes from the 983 Math tutors TutorDNA read in Preply's search results on 6 October 2026.
To see where specialists sit, we grouped tutors by what their headline says they teach, matching whole words, and compared each group with the rest. A tutor can belong to several groups, and any group with fewer than 30 tutors is left out.
The short answer
- The curriculum barely matters. SAT, ACT, IB, GCSE, A-level, calculus and statistics tutors all list at the $15 median.
- A few list higher: AP and university-level tutors at $18, and PhD holders at $17.50.
- Teaching children lists lowest, at $10.
- Math tutors are newer to Preply. They have taught a median 407 lessons, against 1,285 to 1,782 in the three languages TutorDNA tracks.

What the numbers suggest
Math pricing is flat across curricula. The most common specialties, SAT, IB, GCSE, A-level and calculus, each with 170 to 370 tutors, all list at exactly $15. Naming a curriculum doesn't set a tutor apart on price.
Level shows up a little. AP, university-level and PhD tutors list $2.50 to $3 above the median. Their lessons don't explain it: university-level tutors have taught a median 203 lessons, half the Math median.
The range is wide for a low median. The middle half runs from $8 to $25, so a Math tutor at $25 already lists above three quarters of the market.
Children's tutoring lists lowest, at $10 across 147 tutors.
One caution. These are the listed prices of tutors who chose those words. They don't show that adding a word to your headline raises your price, and long-time students may pay less than a tutor lists.
If you teach Math on Preply
- The level you teach matters more than the curriculum. Tutors who name AP or university-level maths list a little higher; SAT, IB, GCSE and A-level tutors all sit at the median.
- Check where your rate sits. The Math rates page places any rate against the whole Math market, and its "What stands out" section compares Math with language tutoring using live figures.
- The Super Tutor badge brings no price premium in Math, but Math Super Tutors teach far more lessons, 58 a month against 22 for other tutors. The Super Tutor guide compares all four subjects.
- Know what you keep. Preply's commission takes 18% to 33% of each lesson, plus every trial. The commission calculator shows what a rate leaves you.
For the same comparison in other subjects, see the English, French and Spanish tutor niches.
How we measured
TutorDNA reads the tutor listings in Preply's public search results every week. This page uses the 983 Math tutors listed on 6 October 2026. A listed price is the hourly rate a new student sees, before Preply's commission. Medians and the middle half (the 25th to 75th percentile) are taken over the tutors in each group. More in the methodology.
