The Preply Super Tutor Badge: What It Changes, Subject by Subject

Do Preply Super Tutors charge more? Against tutors with similar experience: yes in French and English, barely in Spanish, not in Math. Data from 3,870 tutors.

TutorDNA·October 9, 2026

About one tutor in three near the top of Preply's search results has the Super Tutor badge. Does it come with higher rates, or with more students? We compared the 1,360 Super Tutors among the 3,870 tutors TutorDNA read in English, French, Spanish and Math with everyone else.

The short answer: compared with tutors who have taught a similar number of lessons, Super Tutors list higher in French and English, barely higher in Spanish and no higher in Math. In every subject, they are busier.

How many tutors are Super Tutors

SubjectTutorsSuper TutorsShare

Spanish95836738%
French97631732%

Why the plain comparison misleads

Put the medians side by side and Super Tutors list higher in three of the four subjects:

SubjectSuper TutorsOther tutors
English$33$30
French$30$25
Spanish$28$25
Math$15$15

But Super Tutors have also taught more lessons and collected more reviews, and in every subject prices rise with experience on their own. Part of that gap is experience, not the badge.

The fair comparison: tutors with similar experience

Median listed price by lessons taught, Super Tutors first and other tutors second:

Under 500$27 / $26.50$24 / $20$20 / $20$12 / $12
500 to 2,000$35 / $29$34 / $25$28 / $25$15 / $18
2,000 to 5,000$34 / $30$32 / $30$30 / $28$17.50 / $20
Over 5,000$35 / $30too few$30 / $30too few
  • French: higher at every level, by $2 to $9 an hour, the widest gap of the four subjects.
  • English: higher from 500 lessons on, by $4 to $6. Under 500 lessons there's no real difference.
  • Spanish: barely. Super Tutors list at most $3 more than tutors with similar experience.
  • Math: no premium. Between 500 and 5,000 lessons, Super Tutors even list a little lower than other tutors.

Are Super Tutors busier?

Yes, in every subject, on both of the measures we have.

"Booked recently" is the share of tutors carrying Preply's "Booked N times recently" mark on their card. Lessons a month are measured between two scrapes 53 to 64 days apart, for tutors whose price didn't change in between.

One caution: Preply awards the badge partly for being active. Teaching 40 lessons in 90 days and getting half of trial students to subscribe are among its criteria. So Super Tutors are busier partly by definition. These figures show that they are busier, not that the badge made them so.

What it takes to become a Super Tutor

Preply looks at the past 90 days. To get the badge, a tutor needs:

  • at least 40 lessons taught and a rating of 4.8 or more;
  • at least 50% of trial students subscribing after their trial;
  • a reply to at least 80% of students within 24 hours of a new message or trial booking;
  • a message to at least 80% of students within 24 hours after their trial (added on 1 August 2026);
  • at least 80% of trial lessons taught in the Preply Classroom (added on 1 August 2026);
  • no missed lessons, and no more than 5% of trial lessons and 20% of other lessons cancelled or rescheduled.

Is the badge worth aiming for?

It depends on your subject:

  • French and English: among tutors with similar experience, Super Tutors list several dollars an hour higher.
  • Spanish: the price barely changes, but Super Tutors teach more lessons a month, 84 against 71.
  • Math: there's no price premium at all, but Super Tutors teach far more lessons, 58 a month against 22, the biggest gap of the four subjects.

Most of the criteria are habits a tutor controls: replying within a day, teaching trials in the Classroom, and not cancelling.

How we measured

TutorDNA reads the tutor listings in Preply's public search results every week. This guide uses 3,870 tutors: English, Spanish and Math on 6 October 2026, and French on 26 September 2026. A listed price is the hourly rate a new student sees, before Preply's commission. Figures are medians, and any group of fewer than 30 tutors is left out. More in the methodology.

The figures are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0, with a credit to TutorDNA and a link to this page.
